Types of CNG Fueling Stations

When it comes to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling stations, there are primarily two main types: buffered stations and fast-fill stations. These stations cater to different needs and preferences of CNG vehicle users. Here’s a brief overview of each type:

  1. Buffered CNG Fueling Stations:
    • Description: Buffered stations are designed to fill the CNG vehicles at a slower rate compared to fast-fill stations. They use a storage buffer, typically in the form of large storage vessels or a series of smaller high-pressure storage spheres.
    • Filling Process: The CNG is first compressed and stored in the buffer. When a vehicle arrives for refueling, the gas is dispensed from the buffer to the vehicle’s storage tank at a slower rate. This gradual filling process is more gentle and can be advantageous for certain types of vehicles and applications.
    • Applications: Buffered stations are often used for fleets with vehicles that have on-site parking for extended periods, such as buses or delivery trucks. The slower fill rate is less stressful on the vehicle’s components.
  2. Fast-Fill CNG Fueling Stations:
    • Description: Fast-fill stations are designed to rapidly fill CNG vehicles, similar to conventional gasoline stations. They do not typically incorporate large storage buffers, and the CNG is compressed on-site and delivered directly to the vehicle at high pressure.
    • Filling Process: The CNG is compressed in real-time, and vehicles are filled quickly, similar to the time it takes to refuel with gasoline or diesel. Fast-fill stations are more suitable for vehicles that require a quick turnaround, such as taxis, personal vehicles, or other applications where vehicles need to be ready for use promptly.
    • Applications: Fast-fill stations are commonly found in urban areas and along major transportation routes, catering to a wide range of CNG vehicles.

Both types of CNG fueling stations have their advantages and are chosen based on the specific requirements of the fleet or individual vehicle users. The choice between buffered and fast-fill stations depends on factors such as the types of vehicles in the fleet, the desired fill rate, and the available infrastructure.
